simple design, intense content.... Edward Tuffe, 2004

Why have an mmd portfolio?

Having a website with an online portfolio is a powerful medium of communication working as your representative 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. An online or portable portfolio benefits you as a marketing tool in terms of employer awareness, and helps secure your financial freedom in the future. More specifically, having a multimedia design portfolio may boost your self-confidence levels encouraging you to design, edit, produce, and publish more creative and inspiring pieces of art; whether animation, audio, e-learning content, graphics, or video.

Each tab below presents a reflection of, and at least one sample of artistic work I have either created or modified during four years of an undergraduate degree in multimedia design. The first tab displays the categories on which the remaining eight (8) tabs are based upon, and these categories are meant as guidelines to assemble the content of this portfolio; not for portfolio design. You can click on each preview in each tab to see a live demonstration of the actual project.

Obj 1

Communicate effectively in visual, oral, and written form

This artifact reflects on my ability to communicate in a written professional style of writing. It resembles an audio video production script for an Audio Video Production Class taken in the Fall semester of 2008. This project is yet to receive a grade, and there was no activity log warranted.

This artifact is a small part in the entire project. When creating video content, scripts should always be written to prepare for production and post-production. It is very important to have a script as it saves on cost, projected project completion, and gives a sense of order when shooting the video. This artifact prepares me for writing scripts for narration and small video production projects.

This artifact reflects my ability to accomplish the fifth program objective; analyze the characteristics of one or two existing and emerging technologies and their use in an instructional, marketing, or entertainment environment.

The purpose of this work is to redesign the CETES (Center for Emerging Technologies & Entrepreneurial Studies) website.

The target audience for this site includes students, potential and current, current and prospective clients of the center as well as any other individual interested in economics.

The objective of this project is to successfully redesign the website to be more aesthetically pleasing and navigable, utilizing a host of web authoring technologies. The purpose of the site is to act as an instructional medium for its target audience.

The subject category of this work is Capstone II/CETES.

The development of this site has taken me through a number of different phases, each with different changes ranging from minor to major modifications to the overall structure. This site has a number of key features that should be discussed. At first the main navigational content featured both rollover vertical and horizontal menu interfaces upon which when the user moved the mouse over each item, a JavaScript event would be called changing the content of the page. However, after a few discussions with the client, it was determined that an "OnClick" event should be used instead so as not to confuse the user. This approach was in the initial design but was only perfected in the second phase redesign of the site.

I intended on keeping the page clean and simple but at the same time removing the need to manage the numerous different HTML pages that encompassed the prior design. With each design came a number of modifications that intend on making the user experience even much more pleasant. For example, after the rollover function was scrapped, and an "OnClick" event would be used, horizontal tabs were added to supplement the enormous volume of content that is associated with the site. When a user clicks on a menu item, new tabs are displayed in the central portion of the site. Within each of these tabs is another numbered type navigational structure further taking the user into the depths of the site.

The site also displays an animated header portraying a number of different images of the physical CETES site, and a brand new logo that would now be used for all affiliations with the center. (I am not the original creator of the logo, however permission was extended to modify and publish it as I saw fit).

One of the better features of the site is its ability to be viewed in a number of different browsers with little or no change in appearance. I also took into consideration that some users may not have a high speed connection to the Internet, hence that is why I ensured that on a 128kbps connection, the site would fully load within a reasonable timeframe. (10 seconds) This project is yet to receive a grade, and there was no activity log warranted.

This assignment was being completed for Dr. Johari during the Fall Semester of 2008.

Obj 2

Identify and resolve ethical and legal implications of design in the work place

This artifact reflects my ability to accomplish the second program objective; Identify and resolve ethical and legal implications of design in the work place.

The purpose of this project was to develop an interactive portal that would educate users about specific aspects of the nation of Canada.

The target audience consists of adults with an interest in Canada's history, geography, culture and economy.

The objective of this project was to develop a portal to educate and quiz users over a country.

The subject category of this work is Social Studies.

The organization of this work is as follows:

  • Background: The background is designed to look like the geographical structure of Canada on earth, and the Canadian flag. The audience may or may not be from Canada, but the information provided should satisfy knowledge seeking applicants. Hence, the background gives a sense of where on a map Canada can be located, and how to recognize the Canadian flag.
  • Transition: The first screen includes a transition whereby the map of Canada pixelates into the Canadian flag.
  • Audio: I decided to include the Canadian national anthem as background audio for this presentation.
  • Menu: The portal includes sections on Canada's history, geography, culture, and economy. Information can also be read in both English and French as Canada has two natural languages.
  • Quiz: The user has an option to take the quiz at any time. Also, while in the quiz, the user can go back to any section to review the material. The quiz strictly for practice, it is not graded.

Although I received a grade for this project the wealth of information I gained is irreplaceable. This portal was one of the first projects I created using Adobe Director, hence, there were a lot of learning curves as the scripting language used was very restrictive. Nevertheless, considering I have a programming background, it was very easy for me to adapt and use the available syntax and methods at my disposal.

Though I am the sole proprietor of this artifact, most of the information displayed came from other sources. I felt the need to cite my sources so as to be in line with abiding by legal and copyright issues in design. Throughout my time at this institution, as students we were constantly reminded about the importance of citing our sources. We were also reminded that not every bit of information on the Internet is readily usable or trustworthy, and that for most documents, graphics, or other multimedia elements, we would first have to get permission to use them in our own projects from the original creator. I have a personal role in this project since I have been to Canada on more than one occasions in the past, however, this was a learning experience for me as I did not know many of the details I gathered during my research; all of my sources are referenced on the reference page.

Obj 3

Conduct a needs assessment

This artifact reflects my ability to accomplish the third program objective; Conduct a needs assessment.

The purpose of this work was to create a web-based training over a topic of my choice. I choose to do mine over How to create a database using a web scripting language dubbed PHP or Hypertext Preprocessor.

When I began this project, the target audience was limited to my peers at the time. Upon completion I realized that the target audience could be anyone interested in advanced web authoring language.

The objective of this project was to define a need then meet this need by creating web based training. The objective for the training is; Given simple PHP code, and a few software applications, the student (you) will be able to successfully create a database in MySQL using PHP script through WAMP and Adobe Dreamweaver CS3.

The subject category of this work is Web Authoring

This project was organized using the Gagne Model.
  1. Gain the learner's attention.
  2. Inform learners of the objective.
  3. Stimulate recall of prior learning.
  4. Present the stimulus.
  5. Provide guidance for the learners.
  6. Elicit learner performance.
  7. Provide feedback.
  8. Assess learner performance.
  9. Enhance retention and transfer (varied practice and reviews).

The target audience has 3 main needs; equipment need, a personnel need, and a training need.
  1. 1. The individual needs to have access to a computer with internet. (Equipment Need)
  2. 2. Need a team member or another individual with advanced web authoring language knowledge in order to help beginning students beyond training needs. (Personnel Need)
  3. 3. Individuals need to be familiar with the html and know a little about the capabilities of advanced web authoring language, such as PHP. (Training Need)

Obj 4

Identify and describe target audience characteristics

This artifact reflects my ability to accomplish the fourth program objective; Identify and describe target audience characteristics.

The purpose of this work was to create a web based and faced-to-faced distance learning package for teaching 3rd graders basic Spanish vocabulary.

For the web based version, the target audience is any 3rd grader willing to begin learning a new language while the faced-to-faced instructional package targets instructors who are involved with teaching 3rd graders. The methods used may be applied to teaching other lectures.

The objective of this project was to creatively and effectively present instruction for teaching basic Spanish vocabulary on pre-defined themes to 3rd graders as well as providing the learning content itself.

The subject category of this work is Distance Learning and teaching 3rd Graders Basic Spanish Vocabulary. This subject area was chosen from a list of given topic areas for the final project in this class. I chose this particular topic because I have an interest in developing my Spanish vocabulary skills. I also thought that it would be a challenging project to undertake.

While developing this package, especially for the web-based portion, I had to constantly keep in mind that I am developing content for 3rd graders generally children ages 7 - 9 years of age, and that they may not be as web savvy as the average web user. Hence the navigation and content featured in the package would have to be attractive yet very informative at the same time.

The organization of this work is well detailed, and includes everything from methods to be employed when delivering the content, to the content itself. An initial flowchart, initial storyboard, and sample proposal is provided, as well as the finished product that is, a multimedia presentation compiled in Adobe Director. This presentation includes, animation, audio, visual graphics, and attractive text. It is comprised of number vocabulary, classroom objects, and objects 3rd graders would find in their backpacks. Each section is divided into at least three sub-sections after which a short quiz would follow. The final assessment is in the form of a hangman typed game that I proposed would capture the minds of the intended audience. If starting the game without reviewing the content, the user would then realize that in order to be successful he or she would indeed have to review the content first.

This project is being currently graded in multiple sections, starting with the proposal, and moving on to the flowchart. This project has a very specific audience, that is, 3rd grade students and anyone eligible to teach 3rd graders.

Obj 5

Analyze the characteristics of one or two existing and emerging technologies and their use in an instructional, marketing, or entertainment environment

This approach was in the initial design but was only perfected in the second phase redesign of the site.

I intended on keeping the page clean and simple but at the same time removing the need to manage the numerous different HTML pages that encompassed the prior design. Obj 6

Select and use a variety of techniques to define and sequence multimedia content

This artifact reflects my ability to accomplish the seventh program objective; Select and use a variety of techniques to define and sequence multimedia content

The purpose of this artifact was to generate and document instructional analysis, goals, needs and procedures of and for a given topic in my Fall 2008 Distance Learning Class conducted by Professor Karen Hardin. The topic chosen was "Teaching 3rd Graders" Basic Spanish Vocabulary".

The target audience is any instructor wishing to teach basic Spanish vocabulary to third graders.

The objective for this project was to develop a proposal that would state my objective, address my target audience and outline how I intend to present my material including how I would address Gagne's nine events of instruction, Bloom's taxonomy and other learning theories discussed.

The subject category of this work is Distance Learning. While preparing this document, I kept in mind the ultimate audience, that is, the people who will benefit from the guidelines; the 3rd graders. It had to be designed in such a way so as to allow for maximum learning potential. Hence, an overall goal was listed, numerous objectives given, instructional analysis conducted, a target audience stated, elements of system design outlined (addressing learning styles, Gagne's Nine Events of Instruction, Bloom's Taxonomy, and ARCS Model of Motivation,) the medium utilized, and addressing the Learning Theory.

I received an A for this project. This project was prepared in Microsoft Office Word 2007 Professional, and was posted online through the blackboard online portal.

There was no Activity Log sheet for this project.

This assignment was completed for Professor Karen Hardin during the Fall semester of 2008.

Obj 7

Effectively capture and edit graphics, animation, audio and video and import them into computer-based and web-based applications.

This artifact reflects my ability to accomplish the seventh program objective; effectively capture and edit graphics, animation, audio and video and import them into computer-based and web-based applications.

The purpose of this artifact was to create a web-based portal that describes an animal, yourself and an adventure on how you transform into an animal (Animagus).

The target audience would be an animal lover that has an adventurous mind.

The objective for this project was to input graphics, animation, audio and at least one video clip into then macromedia Director MX 2004 and publish for display over the World Wide Web. (Software giant Adobe Inc bought out Macromedia and all of its software licenses. Hence it is now referred to as Adobe Director.)

The subject category of this work is Fictional Animal Science.

I received an A for this project. This project was created in Director and incorporated various types of media; graphics, flash animation, audio and video. This was the first project completed using Macromedia Director MX 2004

There was no Activity Log sheet for this project

This assignment was completed for Dr. Smith during the spring semester of 2007.

Obj 8

Demonstrate familiarity with at least one basic and one advanced web authoring language

This artifact reflects my ability to accomplish the eighth program objective; demonstrate familiarity with at least one basic (HTML) and one advanced (JavaScript) web authoring language.

The purpose of this artifact was to create an inline tabbed interface using simple HTML and CSS, and some calls to functions within an external JavaScript file.

The target audience would be any developer wanting to add a considerable amount of information to a page without having the end user scrolling more than is necessary.

The objective for this project was to develop and style this tabbed interface using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

The subject category of this work was Web Design.

No grade was needed for this project as it was not done specifically for any multimedia class, but was used within a number of currently ongoing projects. I am not new to using programming languages, and hence understanding the code used for this artifact was not as difficult as had seemed. Furthermore, the project itself states that anyone with a sound knowledge in HTML and at least an object oriented programming language coupled with the use of JavaScript can easily use and edit the code to suit their purpose. They will also enjoy the practicality of the design.

There was no Activity Log sheet for this project.

This assignment was not completed for any multimedia design professor at any particular time.
